The Netherlands — a country of 17 million bicycles and 17 million inhabitants. The stock market, microscope and CD were invented here. Here are 15 facts.
- 26% of the Netherlands' area is below sea level. Lowest point: Zuidplaspolder (-7 m). Thanks to polders and dams (e.g. Afsluitdijk 32 km) the country is safe.
- More bicycles than people — 22 million bikes for 17 million inhabitants. Amsterdam: 850,000 bikes, ~12,000 fished out of canals annually.
- World's first stock exchange — Amsterdam (1602). VOC (Dutch East India Company) shares were the first in history. Short selling was invented here too.
- The Netherlands produces 1/3 of the world's coffee. Heineken, Lipton, Friesland Campina, Unilever — all Dutch. Second-largest food exporter after the USA.
- World's tallest nation on average — men 184 cm, women 171 cm. 200 years ago they were Europe's shortest — a diet of milk and cheese reversed the trend.
- Keukenhof — the world's largest tulip garden (32 hectares, 7 million bulbs). Open only 8 weeks per year (March-May), 1.5 million visitors.
- "Holland" is the unofficial name — officially the country is Nederland (Netherlands). Holland is just 2 of 12 provinces. Since 2020, the government promotes only "Netherlands".
- Schiphol Airport is 4 m below sea level. Built on the former Haarlemmermeer lake (drained 1852). 18 million passengers in 2024.
- Vincent van Gogh sold only 1 painting in his lifetime — "The Red Vineyard" in 1888 (400 francs). Today his paintings sell for $80-200 million.
- The microscope was invented by Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (Delft, 1670). First to see bacteria. He also described sperm and red blood cells.
- Amsterdam has 1281 bridges (more than Venice — 391). Plus 165 canals (UNESCO). Singel canal from 1428 — the oldest.
- The CD was invented by Philips + Sony (1982). First CD-Audio pressing: Hannover (DE), but Philips from Eindhoven invented the format. The disc is 12 cm because it fits Beethoven's 9th Symphony (74 min).
- Stroopwafel — caramel waffle, invented in Gouda (18th century). Traditionally placed on hot tea so the caramel softens.
- Dutch flower trade — Aalsmeer (FloraHolland), the world's largest. 12 billion flowers annually, 30% of global trade.
- The Netherlands pioneered the 4-day work week — 26% of employees already work part-time. The highest percentage in the EU.
